LIGHT
Making of Form and Order
The objective of the project is to create a non-denominational chapel that would be placed on the Farmingdale State College campus. The school envisions this as a spiritual space where students of all religions can reflect and gather.
This project considers how innovative use of light can complete this space. This project utilizes creative techniques to manage the flow of light into a room as well as a solution to the contrasts between the chapels and the surrounding environment.
I looked at the seasonal light patterns and the structures on the current school site to come up with a solution. I made changes to the site's layout and designs based on methods inspired by different Architects and their creations.

Background Research

Seinäjoki Library
I researched the Seinäjoki Library in Seinäjoki, Finland. This structure was designed by famous Finnish Architect, Alvar Aalto. The library built in the 1960's uses angled windows and curved interior ceilings to allow a natural flow of light to enhance the ambiance within the building.
Convent La Tourette
This building was designed by Architect Le Corbusier in Éveux, France. This structure uses light cannons and extruding side windows to control light flow into the building.
The Chapel of St. Ignatius
This building was designed by Architect Steven Holl. In this building they use slits and curved walls to reflect light coming in through large openings on the building exterior.
